June 14: World Blood Donor Day
June 14th is dedicated to commemorating World Blood Donor Day, which is why the month was chosen for theRed June Campaign. The movement aims to raise public awareness of the importance of blood donation, as nothing replaces human blood. Therefore, donation is a gesture of generosity and empathy that can save lives.
According to the Ministry of Health, the ideal would be for about 3 to 5% of the population to be blood donors, to guarantee the necessary stocks. However, the average number of donors is less than 2%. In this way, the shortage of donors is a public health issue, as the blood collected is essential in certain urgent and emergency situations and in other health problems, such as, for example, in the case of sickle cell disease, hemophilia, among others.
As a strategy to encourage continuous blood donation and consequently increase blood collection, the Ministry of Health increased the age allowed for donation, comprising the age group between 16 and 69 years, which includes a large part of the population.
The Ministry of Health ensures that blood centers across the country are prepared to receive donors safely, without crowds, and in accordance with the recommendations of the health authorities. Most, if not all, collection points are working with pre-scheduled service, so it is worth the interest to consult, on the internet, the page or social networks of the blood center in the state where you live.
To donate, the candidate must be between 16 and 69 years old – minors under 18 need the formal consent of those responsible. The volunteer must weigh more than 50 kg and present himself with an official photo ID. People with fever, flu or cold, recent diarrhea, pregnant women and postpartum women cannot donate temporarily.
The blood donation procedure is simple, fast and completely safe. There are no risks for the donor, because none of the material used in blood collection is reused, which eliminates any possibility of contamination.
Each volunteer can donate blood up to four times a year, in the case of men, and three times in the case of a woman, with minimum intervals of, respectively, two and three months. To check other restrictions, recommendations and information, access theMinistry of Health.
